What is RULER?
RULER is an evidence-based approach for integrating social and emotional learning into schools, developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. It is an approach used by everyone in the school community- including teachers, staff, students and families. RULER has now been adopted by many of the schools in Region 7, including Northwestern Regional Middle and High School.
Emotions Matter!
The fundamental principle behind RULER is that emotions matter- for everyone. In fact, emotions impact:
-
Attention, memory and learning
-
Decision making and judgment
-
Relationship quality
-
Physical and mental health
-
Prosocial behavior
Emotional Intelligence
Because "emotions matter," RULER aims to build the knowledge and skills pertaining to Emotional Intelligence. These skills include:
The Anchor Tools
The RULER approach develops Emotional Intelligence through the use of four anchor tools. The four Anchor Tools include:
-
The Charter: Helps members of a school community build and maintain a positive climate.
-
The Mood Meter: Helps individuals identify and label their emotions.
-
The Meta-Moment: Helps students and educators handle strong emotions.
-
The Blueprint: Helps students and educators manage conflict effectively.
