Together We SOAR!

What is SOAR?

SOAR is the positive behavior support program at Botelle Elementary School used to define, teach and reinforce appropriate student behaviors in order to create a positive school environment.

At Botelle, we have 4 core behavior expectations:

S:  Show Self Discipline

O:  Offer Kindness

A:  Act Responsibly

R:  Respect Others

Instructional Practices

Students in Grades Pre-K through 6 are explicitly taught the 4 core behavior expectations, as well as skills and strategies to help them maintain positive behaviors. Strategies are taught through lessons with the school pscyhologist and are reinforced daily by classroom teachers. For instance, students are taught strategies to help them to show self discipline, such as using calming strategies when angry. Children's literature is commonly used to reinforce concepts. As you walk through the school, you will see posters in each setting to help remind students of the expectations in each location.

But what are Eagle Tickets?

IMG_1111.JPG

All students can earn Eagle tickets when they are “caught” demonstrating a SOAR expectation (Self-Discipline, Kindness, Responsibility and Respect) by an adult. Students then add their tickets to a classroom jar. Tickets are collected and counted by student helpers. When the WHOLE SCHOOL reaches a set number of tickets, the whole school has a celebration! Some of our celebrations have included ice cream socials, popcorn and a movie and making slime!

Why is SOAR important?

Here are a few reasons why we use SOAR at Botelle School:

  • SOAR helps us to address behavior problems proactively and in a positive manner

  • Gives staff and studentsa common language and set of behavioral expectations to use across settings

  • Provides students with direct instruction, modeling and opportunities for practice

  • Use of Eagle tickets provide immediate feedback for students regarding their behavior
