Social Emotional Learning

1/5

What is SEL?

Social Emotional Learning is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions (CASEL).

Why is it important?

Research has linked SEL programs in schools to...

  • Student gains in social emotional skills

  • Improved attitudes about self, others and school

  • Positive classroom behavior

  • 11 percentile point gain on standardized achievement tests

  • Reduced conduct problems

  • Reduced emotional distress (Durlak, 2011)
