Social Emotional Learning

What is SEL?

Social Emotional Learning is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships,and make responsible decisions (CASEL).

Why is it important?

Research has linked SEL programs in schools to...

  • Student gains in social emotional skills

  • Improved attitudes about self, others and school

  • Positive classroom behavior

  • 11 percentile point gain on standardized achievement tests

  • Reduced conduct problems

  • Reduced emotional distress (Durlak, 2011)

SEL at Botelle

At Botelle School, we are committed to Social Emotional Learning. Our current SEL program includes:

  • RULER: An evidence based approach to guide the learning and practice of emotional intelligence

  • SOAR:  Our very own Postive Behavior Intervention Support model to teach positive behaviors

  • School-wide kindness initiatives led by the Student Council

  • Restorative Practices:  Principles and activities focused on building and maintaining relationships

  • A tiered intervention model which provides small/individual social skills groups

  • DARE (Grade 6)
